Everyone experiences rejection at various times during their lives, whether it is on a personal basis like the rejection from a friend or relative or on a professional basis when someone rejects a business proposal. Sometimes we take the rejection in stride because we don’t take it personally but other times, it can cause feelings of inadequacy.

Sometimes a spirit if rejection may be deeply rooted into your identity since childhood. It causes you to feel unwanted and good enough compared to others. It leads to low-self esteem, feeling worthless and abandoned. Because of this, you constantly seek the approval of others.

In John chapter 4, the woman at the well dealt with many different emotions – a sense of rejection, a feeling of loss, confusion and low self esteem. She really was a double outcast – she was rejected by the Jews because she was a Samaritan and she was rejected by the Samaritans because of her lifestyle.

But Jesus thought she was so important that he rearranged his schedule just to have a personal conversation with her.  Likewise, we can feel rejected, misunderstood and ostracized by society, but Jesus will readily receive us and establish a new purpose and joy in our lives.

Jesus went on to say to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”  We need the living water of Jesus in order to conquer our feelings of rejection.

Learn to believe what God says about you. When you feel rejected by people, remind yourself that you are accepted by God (Ephesians 1:6). God loves you unconditionally and He created you exactly as He wanted you to be. Live your life for an audience of one – God! If other people don’t approve, it’s okay not to get their approval (Galatians 1:10 NIV)
